how to create a zoom in or out option

Hi

I want to create a zoom in / out option on images for an artists gallery page. We've seen a similar effect, where the zoom is actually animated - ie, as you click into the area the image grows, rather than jumping to an enlargement.

Does anyone know a way of creating this effect so that the browser can select an area to zoom into, and that part will remain the central point with the image enlarging at this point??

If you dont know HOW, maybe you can sugest WHAT (ie, what language, format, etc)
