New Scam (Email NOT Phone!)

I just got this message at work:

I’ve received this warning now from two sources, Thames Valley Police and BT and decided it’s probably worthwhile circulating.



There is a new kind of mobile phone scam. A missed call will show on your mobile phone. The number is 0709 020 3840! The last four numbers may vary, but the first four numbers will remain the same! If you call this number back, you will be charged £50.00 per minute. People have complained about their phone bills, once they have realised the cost of the call, but apparently this is completely legal. So beware, do not call back numbers beginning with 0709 unless you recognize the number.

Hah. This is unreal. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

There is no damn £50/m phone number, this is clearly just an e-mail scam (send this to all your friends). Obviously I saw it for what it was strait away but it amazes me that the average business person is so clueless even in todays environment.

Moral of the story: Before you make yourself look like a complete tit sending out e-mails to thousands of people in your organization. DO SOME RESEARCH FIRST.

I got this kind of mail a few months back but the number was 0009something and our telecom company does give this kind of numbers for about 90 times the normal telephone charge. Not sure about the UK but you can't be very sure about this.

No there is nothing like this in the UK. The highest tarriff is £1.50 a minute, there is legislation against it.
